Heart Healthy Vegan, Plant Based Diet

by Rebel Jon on January 9, 2011

Jon Perry HeadshotOn September 25, 2010, after watching former President Clinton's interview on CNN about how he lost so much weight, I decided to read the books referenced by President Clinton that day.

This plant based or vegan diet is not a religion to me. I chose the diet for no moral reasons, but rather to lose weight and be healthier.  I started the plant based diet in mid-October 2010.  By New Year's Day 2011, I had lost 26 pounds.  I feel healthier and I don't feel sluggish after eating a meal.  As a Type 2 diabetic, my sugar levels don't spike and my intake of oral medications has greatly reduced.  My goal is no meds.  Of course, I am working with my doctor.

DisclaimerAlways consult with your doctor (or Primary Care Provider) before you begin any diet or weight loss plan. Ask them about how this will affect any medications you might be taking, any types of activities or foods to avoid, and anything else that may come to light when you start making dietary changes.

I use a Kindle, so I immediately downloaded these three incredible books that have not only educated me, but more importantly, changed my life.

  1. Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure‘ by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. MD
  2. The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health‘ by T. Colin Campbell, Thomas M. Campbell
  3. The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight, and Gain Health‘ by Dean Ornish M.D.
